Who We Are
At Hedges Chapel, you'll find church deeply rooted in history and ready for upward and outward growth.
Our deepest value is to encounter Jesus through worship songs that exalt Him and Bible teaching that engages the hearers. You will sing both older and newer songs, and use a Bible to find Scripture passages that Pastor Jeremy selects. You are not a spectator at Hedges, but a participant!
We value fellowship and hospitality, so expect to be warmly greeted and invited to come back. You will see people wearing jeans, as well as people wearing suits. The important thing is not what you wear, but that you are here to worship Jesus.
At Hedges, we value teaching our children the word of God and worshiping Jesus with our kids. We offer Sunday School classes from nursery through high school beginning at 9:30am. And at 10:30am your kids are invited to stay and worship with you during the morning worship service or go to Junior Church during Pastor Jeremy's sermon, where they will hear an age-specific message. Junior Church is offered for all elementary age kids.
Pastor Jeremy loves Jesus, his family, and ministry in the local church - in that order. There is nothing that he desires or longs for more than the manifest presence of Jesus daily, in every aspect of family and church life. He's also been married for 10 amazing years to Melvina. Together they have three children: Jasmin, Josiah, and Mateo. And besides date nights with Melvina, spending time with his kids is Jeremy's favorite thing to do. (On his days off you'll probably see him at the park or on his lawn, playing games with his three youngins.)
Jeremy is originally from the Ripley, WV area and Melvina is from Laredo, TX. And just from those demographical differences, not to mention their recent BIG 12 Football rivalry, it must have been GOD who put them together! They met in Circleville, OH while attending Ohio Christian University and got married shortly following graduation. From there, they spent time in Avon Park, FL ministering to youth and children, then went on to volunteer as missionaries for a short time in El Salvador, and finally ended up pastoring for a few years in Cambridge, OH before coming to Hedges Chapel in September '14.
The Hurd family life verse is Acts 20:24
"But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus—the work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace of God."
Hedges Chapel's beginning predated the Civil War by twenty years. Its history is rich and its legacy is as enduring as the slate roof that covers her modest frame. The surrounding is rural, the community is warm and the atmosphere for worship is refreshing. You are invited to a church that reveres her heritage and welcomes her future. Hedges may very well be the church that you have longed for.
